Beats, Rhymes and Life

As most of you who read this already know (and some don’t)  I’m a big fan of Hip Hop. It was the first music that really grabbed me growing up.  From Run DMC, Eric B and Rakim, EPMD and on to The Beastie Boys no matter what kind of mood I was in Hip Hop was always faithful to me and never seem to let me down.  I find that when I’m writing my solo music (blue collar prophet) my first inclination is to start making Hip Hop beats.  I immediately start thinking about things that i love to hear over good beats such as horn snaps, simple blues guitar riffs and saucy funk baselines.  Its like a drug that got into my veins when I was young and there is just no way to get it out. I’m an addict for life and I’m fine with it!  With that being said I’ll move on to the tour…

I have to start by saying that KMK isn’t necessarily my brand of beer (mainly because i’m not much of a “smoker”) BUT they are REALLY good at what they do.  The production behind them is great.  There beats, samples, etc are definitely worth checking out if you haven’t given it a chance yet.  I had the pleasure of sitting down with a couple of the guys a few times after there show and found that they are seriously down to earth people who, like all musicians I know, have a TRUE love for music and especially the music that pushes them on a daily basis.  “Daddy X”  (as they call him)  told me “I was in punk bands when I started in the scene.” I wasn’t surprised to be honest.  One funny thing that I’ve learned over the years about Hip Hop is that most of the people in the scene have had some sort of a punk rock background.  I know you are probably saying “ya all the white Hip Hop groups” but that’s actually not true.  There have been plenty of Hip Hip groups that talk about Punk Rock that haven’t been “white”.   Charlie Tuna from Jurassic 5 said “mixing Hip Hop and Punk Rock in one shot” on their Power in Numbers record.  I can’t quite remember a song in particular  but Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest has also talked about Punk Rock on a record or 2.  Daddy X  told me that growing up he was super into punk and everything about the scene but one day he wanted to try something different, something out his realm, and it was Hip Hop that pulled him in. I firmly believe that music chooses you.  Also on the tour was Big B and I’ve sat and talked music with him a bunch.  Actually 2 nights ago Big B, Dirtball (kmk) and “esso” from BlissnEsso were all in the green room talking Hip Hop and my new found love “Dub Step” and Big B said something I will probably never forget.  “Don’t mind Jim, He might look weird but he knows allot about Hip Hop.”  Honestly it was such an incredible feeling to hear him say that.  Big B is probably one of the most “real” MC’s I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with .  He’s lived every moment that he speaks about and he truly speaks his mind.  There is nothing fake about that guy that that is what makes him a success.

Over the years of playing music you develop a love for everything in music.  Even the things you never thought you would like.  Its a respect factor ya know.  You have to open your ears not your eyes. You have to “hear” beyond the  gimmicks and beyond the stereotype to find the true music within.  I’ve always said, there is good things about ALL music you just have to dig deep sometimes to find it.  I know allot of people out there can relate to this “feeling” as I talk about it. Weather or not its Hip Hop, Metal, Punk, Dance, Country etc. again music chooses us, we don’t choose music.  Its that day you hear that particular song and you realise you found the 1 music that really gets you going.  I look forward to my adventures on finding new music and I will never loose my drive to do so.

Cheers everyone!  Happy Hunting!

P.s. If you have a music you would like to share please leave me a comment I would love to check it out!

Party Monsters Tour

It like the first time you visit a place you haven’t visited since you were a kid.  The sounds, the sights and most importantly the smells bring you back to a place you vaguely remember. Once you’re there long enough and the flood gates open you suddenly remember like it was yesterday… TOUR.  Although it wasn’t quite yesterday, it WAS only 3 short weeks ago.  The van still smells, the road is still long and the sound of my headphones is still trying to drowned out everything around me so I can concentrate on school and work :)   Its a funny thing  but I honestly miss it.  Now don’t get me wrong I love being at home, seeing friends, working on music projects that I’ve yet to complete, etc. etc. etc. but there is something about that van, the road and how it NEVER ends that just pulls me back.  I’m sitting in Tucson (not far from home) and I’m happy.  I’m ready to be out here playing music, hanging with my “other family” and enjoying the gift I was givin.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years cause without you I wouldn’t have a career and I wouldn’t be able to sit here and write about how much I love my job!
CHEERS!

P.s. more updates to come… keep your eyes out :)

I ran across this on the footer of a website today and I thought it was so rad i just HAD to post it! Now i would definitely make some changes to it such as: Firefox over Safari but its brilliant none the less!!!

“Hi, if you are coming to this site via Internet Explorer 6, you might not be getting the best experience possible. Honestly, I can’t even begin to think about what your entire experience on the internet must be like? (…probably like riding a bike on the highway while cars blow by you on their way to Costco to get gallons of mayonnaise and 60-inch plasma TV’s). How will you ever be able to use this website?????? You wont. You’re an asshole and your browser is an asshole. So look, I’m going to be honest: I kind of hate you. BUT we c-a-n make this work. Here is what I am going to need you to do: fire up your Toshiba ShitBook© that weighs about 45 pounds, wipe the Cheeto dust off the screen, download Safari, delete Internet Explorer from your computer, punch yourself in the face, and get me a pulled pork sandwich. ”

Authority Zero/Voodoo Glow Skulls tour 2010

Sorry its been a while between updates i know i was doing really good there for a bit haha!
So I left off in Texas..

Austin was super cool!  Although i will admit I had a bit to much to drink that day and had a bit of trouble keeping a beat we all had a blast and the crowd was great as always.  Our front of the venue was the Adult Swim festival and that was sooo cool!   I’m not sure how many of you follow my Twitter but i posted a picture of a guy with the most killer mustache i’ve ever seen from that day.  it was epic!!!  All in all Austin = KILLER ;)

El  Paso.  This show we were all a bit sketched out about at first because of the current situation down there.  If any of you don’t know about it you should read up… its a bit scary, drug cartels, heads getting chopped off etc… Needless to say we didn’t know what to expect.  We got to the venue and to our surprise it was quite bigger than expected.  The people there we super cool and treated us better than any venue on the run yet so we all were really happy right away!  All the bands got set up and then proceeded to play the hurry up and wait game (my personal favorite NOT).  Jeremy and I went across the street to grab some dinner and when we got back, to our surprise, there was over 800 people at the show!  This was a MONDAY night in El Paso!  We had no idea so many people would show up for the tour!  We took the stage and the place went ballistic!  Mosh pits, kids flying all over crowd surfing, singing the songs it was awesome!  Definitely the best show of the tour at that point!  When we finished we went to walk off stage (VGS was headlining that night) and the crowed chanted so loud that we had to go back up for 1 more song hahah we couldn’t believe it!  Never before in the history of this band have we ever been asked to do an encore with out being the headliner of the evening but hey since it was co-headline tour VGS was totally supportive and we went back on!  El Paso….. KILLER!  Can’t wait to go back!

Albuquerque New Mexico.  The Launchpad…
This is a venue we are never disappointed in.  We’ve been playing The Launchpad for years now and the kids are always great and the venue is always a blast!  Joe treats us super well there and we’ll be going back as long as he is open!  The show was about 20 people from being sold out and the kids were nuts the whole night it was awesome!  I would like to point out that for dinner we all (us and voodoo) went to eat at a place called The Black Bird.  They hook up the bands playing at The Launchpad.  Just about everyone had this sandwich/burger called …….  Check this out, It was a big as burger with grilled cheese sandwiches for buns!!!  i was in heaven hahaha!  I forgot to grab a photo cause i was to anxious to eat it hahaha.  We all left that place happy campers and I highly recommend it!

Ok so the next update is Phoenix but I’m gonna do a separate post for that.  I just wanted to catch everyone up for now…  We are currently headed up to Santa Cruz to play 2 nights with The Expendables… This will get messy…. haha

CHEERS!
